Why Our Family Chooses Organic

I am passionate about eliminating toxins from our lives because sadly every day we are exposed to countless chemicals in our homes, places of work and also in our diet. Pesticides don’t just control “pests” on crops but they have been proven to kill bees other animals, destroy soil quality and pollute our drinking water. You may be thinking, “so what if pesticides happen to kill bees?” the answer to that question is no bees means not only no honey, but without bees to pollinate our crops, there would be no food. Scary stuff. These are just a few of the reasons it’s so important to choose organic food for you and your family.

This week is Organic Week in Canada. Organic is the most heavily regulated and scrutinized food system in our beautiful country. The “Canada Organic” logo is our assurance that products have been grown and handled according to strict procedures and rules which includes non-GMO crops.

Choosing organic food greatly reduces our exposure to pesticides and their harmful health effects which can include cancer, infertility in both men and women, neurological and neurodevelopment effects. Where possible our family eats local, organic food and I recommend you do the same.

If you can’t always access local and organic, there two lists that explain the worst offenders and the cleanest alternatives. Each year, the Environmental Working Group releases the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen to help you make informed decisions in the produce isle. The Clean Fifteen are foods that have lower levels of pesticides while The Dirty Dozen are foods you should only consume when you are sure they are organic.
